The Typical Feature of Pynkhurst
The lack of distinctiveness of such individual graphs is in fact conceded by Fletcher himself. In his discussion of the form of y with an upright left branch he remarks that it is ‘by no means exclusively idiosyncratic, and its counterpart can be seen in some number of other contemporary hands’.
Similarly the writing of a large superscript letter in abbreviations is ‘by no means an exclusively idiosyncratic scribal habit, for its counterpoint can be found in some number of other contemporary hands’, and final with an extended wavy finishing stroke is ‘a typical feature of Pynkhurst copy, but again is not unique to it’.
Perhaps most telling are Fletcher’s comments regarding the form of g with a projecting spike, where he notes that ‘There is room to doubt Jewelry On Sale that this form of g should be accorded an especially high regard as a criterion of distinction, and certainly not for any supposed uniqueness, for parallels to it may be found in more manuscripts…
It is probably better to regard the evidentiary value of this g as consisting in the extent that it keeps company with yet other graphetic choices which, only when found congregating in a stint, seem more persuasively suggestive of Pynkhurst’s activity’.
This is of course exactly Mooney’s point: in itself the form is not sufficiently diagnostic; it is rather the combination of all of these features that helps to identify the scribe’s hand.
But in Trinity 244 many of these characteristic features are absent, or only present in forms that approximate to those typical of Pynkhurst, so that these more common features are left to carry the weight of the identification themselves.
On their own these forms are not sufficiently distinctive to support an identification, only the very idiosyncratic treatment of ascenders with tremolo or knotted tremolo, or the barbed wire inside looped ascenders could alone carry this weight, distinguishing a piece of late fourteenth or early fifteenth century anglicana formata as clearly Pynkhurst’s.
These very distinctive decorative features occur in almost every piece of writing written exclusively by Pynkhurst; the exceptions being the single leaf fragments of Troilus and Criseyde and the Canterbury Tales 3 It does not appear in the manuscript of the Confessio Amantis.
But Pynkhurst is one of five copyists contributing to the production of this manuscript and so may have been constrained not to use such a flamboyant and idiosyncratic device, to allow the writing to appear consistent across the various stints.
The knotted tremolo does not appear in the Mercers’ Petition either, but it seems likely that in this case the nature of the document and the gravity of the commission operated as a constraint upon his decorative impulses.
The knotted tremolo is found in the Mercers’ Account book, in the accounts for 1391-3, but it does not appear in the post 1393 entries; Chanel Jewelry it is significant that Mooney expressed some caution and hesitation in attributing these later entries to Pynkhurst.
The knotted tremolo does appear in the Boece manuscript attributed to Pynkhurst; in her article associating this manuscript with Pynkhurst Estelle Stubbs refers to this feature as ‘the most notable similarity’ to Hengwrt and Ellesmere.
